At I/O on May 19, Google announced the biggest change to its front door in 25 years: the search box is becoming an "intelligent" box, and this summer it starts serving generative, interactive pages built by Gemini Flash 3.5 instead of a list of links. The "10 blue links" era — the thing the entire web was structured around — is officially over.

Here's the number that should stop you: zero-click searches are already ~60% of queries, and publisher traffic is collapsing as a result. Google isn't sending you to the web anymore. It's reading the web for you and keeping you home.

I run a blog. So let me say the quiet part out loud: the deal we all signed up for just got cancelled, and nobody asked us.

Your Content Was Never the Product. It Was the Inventory.

For 25 years there was an implicit contract. You publish something useful — docs, a tutorial, a teardown, a recipe — and in exchange Google sends you readers. That referral traffic was the currency. It funded journalism, open-source docs, Stack Overflow answers, every "how I fixed this weird bug" blog post you've ever been grateful for. The whole open web was a marketplace where attention flowed back to the people who made the thing.

The reframe is this: to Google, your content was never the product. It was the inventory. You were stocking the shelves of a store you didn't own, and the store just figured out it can synthesize the products itself and stop paying suppliers. The AI-generated answer page is the moment the middleman realized it didn't need the makers — it only needed what the makers already made.

And the loop is vicious. Less referral traffic means less reason to publish. Less publishing means a thinner open web. A thinner open web means worse training data for the next model. Google is sawing off the branch it's sitting on — it just has enough runway not to feel the fall yet.

Three Things You Own That This Lands On

If you build for a living, this isn't an abstract media story — it hits three things you actually own.

First, your docs. If your product's documentation lives on the open web, its job is changing from "rank for humans" to "be the source an AI cites." That's the whole GEO/AEO scramble: structure for machine extraction, mark up clearly, state facts unambiguously, because the reader is now a model deciding whether to quote you. The win condition isn't a #1 ranking; it's being the citation inside the generated answer.

Second, your discovery channel. If you've counted on organic search to find your side project, your library, your startup — that funnel is narrowing fast. The traffic that "just showed up" is the traffic that's evaporating. Distribution is moving to places search can't intermediate: communities, newsletters, repos people already trust, word of mouth among humans who still click.

Third — the uncomfortable one — your own dependence on the web you're helping hollow out. Every time you take the AI summary instead of clicking through, you're voting for the model over the maker. We're all doing it. I do it. That's exactly why it's working.

The Good Stuff Is About to Go Private

I think we're misnaming this as "the death of search." It's not. It's the death of the open web's business model, and search is just the first domino. Search was the cash register for a 25-year arrangement where making things public paid off. Pull the register and the incentive to be public goes with it.

Here's my actual prediction: the good stuff goes private. The genuinely valuable knowledge — the hard-won, undocumented, expensive-to-acquire stuff — stops landing on public blogs and migrates behind logins, into paid communities, gated Discords, and members-only newsletters where the value can't be scraped and re-served by a model for free. The open web doesn't vanish; it gets worse, flooded with AI sludge optimized to be cited, while the real signal retreats to where it can still be paid for. We're about to relearn that "information wants to be free" was only ever true when something else was footing the bill.

So if you make things — code, writing, docs, anything — the move isn't to rage against the machine. It's to own your relationship with the humans who value your work directly, before the only path to them runs through a box that paraphrases you and keeps the click. Build the list. Build the community. Treat search traffic like a legacy system that still runs but that you're actively migrating off of. The makers who survive this won't be the ones who ranked best. They'll be the ones who didn't need to.
